Leweston Prep

Set in forty-six acres of inspiring countryside, Leweston Nursery, Pre-prep and Prep is a very special place to learn and grow. Our children are happy, purposeful and positively bubbling with enthusiasm for all that they do.

We firmly believe that children learn best when they are happy and, in order to secure that happiness, our pastoral care systems are exceptional. The children are firmly at the heart of all that we do and our dedicated staff to develop a deep understanding of each child, learning exactly how to bring the best out of them. The school also prides itself on its family atmosphere. Our older children spend time supporting our youngest and, in turn, the children in the younger years follow their example and look to support one another.

Our Location: Leweston is situated three miles outside of Sherborne, Dorset surrounded by beautiful countryside in the heart of Hardy’s Wessex. Leweston is accessible by road or rail from London Heathrow in under two hours

Why Leweston Prep?

Academic Excellence: We develop excellence in all areas with a wide range of additional opportunities that allow pupils to become well-rounded, interested and enthusiastic about school-life. Pupils have time and space to benefit from our beautiful site, with running clubs, Forest School, gardening and a daily welly walk for our Pre-Prep pupils. Whilst the curriculum narrows in many educational settings, we pride ourselves on the breadth of offering. Pupils have weekly lessons in Modern Foreign Languages, Latin, Performing Arts, Music, Design Technology, ICT, Art, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Science, Swimming, PE and Games. These opportunities broaden their horizons and enable everyone to discover their passion, and their strength.

Wrap around care: Leweston Prep recognises the challenges facing busy families providing practical solutions to support them. All students are welcome on site from 8am to 6pm with evening activities and supervised prep sessions for day pupils. For boarders there is a full range of flexible options. With no Saturday school families can spend precious weekend time together but a busy programme is in place for those in School. Buses run across Somerset and Dorset and there is a pick-up at Sherborne Station to meet students using the train.

Enrichment Programme: All pupils from Reception to Year 6 participate in trips and visits out of school. Every summer Years 5 and 6 spend a week at Braeside Activity Centre learning leadership and team building skills through outdoor activities. Oher recent trips have included visits to Gore Farm, Lulworth Cove, Careymoor Recycling centre, Dippy on Tour and @Bristol

This is carried across into the extensive programme of clubs and activities we offer to all ages. Activities are changed each term and pupils sign-up for a block of each one. The programme is themed around academic: debate club and art academy; hobbies: gardening, cookery and comic making; performing arts: ballet and LAMDA or sport: fencing, tennis and running club.

Boarding: Leweston has been a boarding school for over a hundred years with almost half the school boarding at some time in their school career. The boarding houses are located in the main school building and provide a warm and friendly ‘home from home’ for pupils in Year 4 upwards.

Leweston’s flexible approach to boarding and the absence of Saturday lessons allows weekly boarders to return home on Friday night for precious family time, whilst full boarders can relax and take advantage of the wide range of trips, sports and activities on offer over the weekends.

Forest School: In September 2017 Leweston Prep became an accredited Forest School. Whilst we have always embraced our outdoor space and ethos, the accreditation enables us to offer a host of outdoor opportunities to the children in order to benefit every area of the curriculum.

The possibilities of Forest School are endless, but the benefits remain the same. Children learn to work as part of a team, to solve problems and adapt their ideas, to interact with the world around them and to approach challenges logically. These ‘soft-skills’ will be transferable and beneficial to them throughout the rest of their lives. In our modern world, the knowledge that we provide our children with may become obsolete, but the ability to think and adapt will always be crucial.

Sport: Sport is an important part of school life. The extensive grounds, sports hall and indoor swimming pool provide us with excellent facilities and all pupils are encouraged to join in with a wide variety of sports. PE and Games are taught as separate lessons from Reception to Year 6 and all pupils also have a weekly swimming lesson throughout the academic year.

Prep pupils can also take advantage of the fantastic Pentathlon and Equestrian opportunities on offer. Read more about Leweston Senior School here
